In her book A Killing Cold, Kate Alice Marshall crafts a chilling mystery that keeps you guessing long after you’ve closed the book. Set in the sprawling, isolated woods of the Daltons’ private retreat, Idlewood, the novel weaves together family secrets, buried memories, and a web of suspense that never loosens its grip on you.

Theo Scott, engaged to Connor Dalton, soon realizes she knows very little about the exclusive family she’s marrying into. As she uncovers long-buried secrets, including her own family’s secrets, the mystery deepens, and she discovers that no one in Idlewood can be trusted.

Marshall’s writing is beautifully atmospheric, with each chapter unveiling a new twist that keeps readers on edge. Theo’s emotional journey—reclaiming lost memories tied to her traumatic past—adds depth to the unfolding mystery, making every revelation feel both personal and earned. Theo is an engaging, complex narrator, and Marshall’s depiction of her struggles with memory and trust only intensifies the tension that builds page after page. The pacing of the story was excellent, giving just enough information to satisfy the reader while leaving just enough out to keep them coming back for more.

I couldn’t put the book down. Every chapter left me eager for more, yet I found myself slowing my pace just to savor the unfolding mystery. It’s the kind of book that will pull you in and not let go, leaving you with a mix of suspense and awe as you reach the final page.

If you’re a fan of atmospheric mysteries that slowly unravel with a perfect balance of tension and revelation, A Killing Cold is a must-read. It’s the kind of book you’ll want to curl up with on a cold winter’s day, glass of wine in hand, and let yourself be swept away by its secrets.
