In her gripping suspense novel Piercing the Fog, Cheryl Nickle crafts a high-stakes thriller set against a quaint small town backdrop. This contemporary tale unfolds through the eyes of Norah Parrish, who, after a routine stop at a garage with her husband Patrick, is suddenly abducted by a group of men and taken to an unknown location. There, she finds herself held captive with others who, like her, are accused of crimes they didn’t commit. As the story unravels, Norah learns that the vigilantes responsible for her abduction—who target society’s outcasts—are operating well beyond the law. To her shock, her husband, unbeknownst to her, is part of an undercover government operation investigating their actions.
What truly sets Piercing the Fog apart is Nickle’s masterful use of imagery, drawing readers deep into Norah’s experience. The claustrophobic atmosphere of the dingy, windowless room is rendered with such vivid detail that it’s almost impossible not to feel trapped right alongside Norah. Most of the story takes place in and around North East, Maryland—the small town where my husband grew up. As someone familiar with the area, it was exciting to see well-known locations woven into the fabric of the story in such a creative and immersive way.
Nickle’s background as an Irish Catholic from Cecil County adds a layer of authenticity to the narrative, with Norah’s character reflecting the author’s own. As a retired English teacher, Norah often draws on literary classics, making references that enrich the emotional depth of the tale and add an intellectual layer to the suspense. The pacing of Piercing the Fog is impeccable, with each new revelation heightening the stakes and keeping readers on the edge of their seats. If you’re a fan of suspenseful thrillers with well-drawn characters, a strong sense of place, and a compelling female narrator, Piercing the Fog is a must-read. It’s the kind of book that will keep you turning pages late into the night, eager to discover what happens next.
