In her captivating mystery novel, author Maryellen Winkler brings readers into the heart of the scenic Brandywine State Park, Delaware, in a thrilling narrative centered around a chilling murder and the enigmatic symbol of an owl tattoo. The story unfolds during the park’s famous annual meteor shower, an event I’ve now added to my personal bucket list to experience firsthand after reading this book.
Emily, our observant and relatable protagonist, along with her clairvoyant friend discover the body of Alicia, a young woman with a bright future and revolutionary ideals, whose life is abruptly ended under mysterious circumstances. As the investigation progresses, Emily must untangle a complex web involving Alicia’s fiancé, her brother, and members of a shadowy banking organization, all while racing against time to uncover the truth.
One of the elements I enjoyed most about this novel was its vivid setting. Brandywine State Park, renowned for its picturesque beauty and annual meteor showers, sets an ideal backdrop for mystery and intrigue. The atmospheric descriptions made me feel as though I was right there under the starlit Delaware sky, and I found myself eagerly marking my calendar to visit this famed meteor-watching location myself.
The inclusion of Emily’s clairvoyant companion adds an intriguing supernatural layer to the plot, blending mild paranormal elements seamlessly with traditional mystery elements. Additionally, local lore, historical details about the area, and nostalgic reflections on Wilmington and the Brandywine Valley enrich the storytelling, making it relatable and engrossing—especially appealing to readers familiar with the region or those interested in local history.
The author is from the area, and I had the chance to meet her and get my copy of the book signed recently at the library in North East, Maryland. I love how she drew on local places and legends to help create a compelling story. One thing I found intriguing was the references to the real-life murder of Anne Marie Fahey, a local young woman whose unsolved murder made headlines in the 1990s when her affair with state prosecutor Tom Capano turned deadly. Capano was convicted for her murder, but sadly, her body was never found.
While this novel is the first I’ve read from this series, I’m now excited to explore more of Emily’s adventures. This book was not just a page-turner; it sparked my curiosity to discover more about Brandywine State Park and its famous meteor showers, something I’d love to experience in person.
Overall, I highly recommend this engaging mystery to anyone looking for a quick yet substantive read filled with local flare, historical intrigue, and engaging characters to keep you guessing until the final page.
