Glendy Vanderah’s Where the Forest Meets the Stars was a surprising gem of a find for me – outside of my usual reading preferences, yet exactly the kind of story I didn’t know I needed. Blending mystery, emotional depth, nature, and a slow-burning romance, this novel brings together two broken souls and an enigmatic little girl in a tale that’s as moving as it is magical.
The story centers on Joanna Teale (Jo), a resilient young woman who has endured the unimaginable – breast cancer and the recent loss of her mother to the same illness. She throws herself into her graduate research on birds in rural Illinois, hoping the quiet solitude will help her heal. But her summer takes a strange turn when a barefoot girl in tattered clothes shows up at her doorstep claiming to be an alien from another galaxy, sent to Earth on a mission to witness five miracles.
The girl, who calls herself Ursa, returns night after night, despite Jo’s protests. Eventually, Jo finds that she has been sleeping on an old mattress in her shed, cuddled up with a stray puppy she’s named Little Bear. Despite repeated attempts to find missing child reports that match Ursa’s appearance, Jo comes up empty. Is Ursa really who she says she is? Or is something far more human – and heartbreaking – behind her story?
When the authorities offer little help, Jo turns to her reclusive neighbor, Gabe, for support. Gabe, struggling with depression and agoraphobia, forms an unexpected bond with both Jo and Ursa. As the three navigate their fragile new dynamic, long-buried secrets emerge – not just Ursa’s, but also Gabe’s – and healing slowly begins to take root in them all.
This book is no lighthearted stroll through the woods. It dives into grief, trauma, abuse, and the quiet persistence of hope. It moved me deeply – especially Jo’s raw fear of illness and the uncertainty that follows survival. As someone who has faced chronic health struggles, I found her emotional arc especially resonant and beautifully portrayed.
On top of that, Vanderah brings a poetic flair to the novel, weaving in references to Shakespeare, astronomy, and the natural world in a way that feels lyrical but grounded. Where the Forest Meets the Stars is quietly magical – an emotional read (and a perfect beach read!) for anyone craving something tender, mysterious, and deeply human.
This isn’t just a story about a girl who may or may not be from the stars. It’s about finding light after darkness, and discovering love in the unlikeliest of places. I can’t recommend it enough!
