In her domestic mystery thriller The Perfect Marriage, Jeneva Rose grips her audience with a modern whodunit that will leave you second guessing and theorizing every possible character. Full of shocking twists and dark turns, this book is jam-packed with juicy details that you genuinely won’t see coming. It’s been on my TBR list for so long, so I was really excited to devour this one, and it lived up to every ounce of the BookTok hype it’s earned.
Adam and Sarah Morgan are college sweethearts who have been married for ten years. He’s a struggling writer who has published very little. She’s a powerhouse criminal defense attorney at a prestigious DC law firm, whose stellar reputation in the business proceeds her. Sarah’s job tends to be the first thing on her mind, so Adam starts to feel neglected. When he meets a young waitress named Kelly (who is also trapped in what seems to be a loveless marriage), they end up entering a passionate love affair.
One morning, Kelly turns up dead at the Morgans’ secluded Virginia lake house, and all signs point to Adam. When Sarah decides to take on his defense, their already-strained marriage becomes the centerpiece of a brutal murder trial. One of them is lying. One of them knows more than they’re letting on. And as you read their split narration, you’ll find yourself second-guessing everything and everyone.
While unrealistic with all the connecting details between characters, this book really delivers an amazing story. Be warned though, there is a little bit of spice. Not nearly enough to overtake the actual story by any means, but there is a little bit there. If that’s something you don’t like in your books, just know going into this book that it starts on the very first page.
One minor detail I loved about this one was the setting – Washington, DC and its suburbs. Sarah is a partner at a law firm in the nation’s capital, and the couple’s nearby vacation home where Adam spends most of his time writing (and being unfaithful to his wife) is a lakehouse in Virginia, just a little bit outside of the city. Having grown up around this area (albeit on the Maryland side) it’s always fun to read a good thriller that takes place around the area I grew up in!
This is the most jaw dropping, twistiest thriller I have read in a while, and I don’t say that lightly. This one was a crazy ride from start to finish. If you’re looking for a mystery that will have you basically running to keep up, then this is your next read!
