If you’re looking for a fast-paced, emotionally gripping psychological thriller with plenty of twists and dark secrets, The Stillwater Girls by Minka Kent is one to add to your list. It’s an easy, immersive listen on audiobook (also available on Kindle Unlimited), and perfect for a road trip or a weekend binge read. I easily got through it in just one day.

The novel weaves together two seemingly separate narratives that slowly begin to converge: one about isolation, survival, and the trauma of captivity; the other about a woman facing her own unraveling reality in the wake of a mysterious loss. It blends themes of kidnapping, mental illness, missing persons, and generational trauma, all wrapped into one chilling mystery.

The heart of the story lies with three sisters who’ve been raised off the grid in a remote cabin deep in the woods, with no electricity, no outside contact, no idea what the real world even looks like. Their lives are strict, isolated, and dictated by their survivalist mother. But when the youngest girl falls ill, their mother takes her “into town” to see a doctor… and never comes back.

As months pass and supplies dwindle, the older sisters are left to fend for themselves. Just when things seem most desperate, a strange man appears at their cabin door. He claims to want to help. But can they trust him? Who is he and why is he really there? And most concerningly, how does he know their mother?

Minka Kent does a fantastic job building suspense in both storylines, slowly revealing how these two very different lives connect. The pacing is tight, the tension is constant, and the emotional stakes are surprisingly high. What starts as a story about survival becomes a deeper examination of identity, memory, and what happens when your entire worldview begins to crack.

While the audiobook narration is smooth and easy to follow, the story itself is anything but predictable. I really thought for a while there that I’d figured this one out, but the twists kept coming and I found myself constantly second-guessing what was really going on. Every time I thought I’d cracked it, there were more crazy details bubbling up to the surface to prove me wrong.

If you enjoy thrillers with a psychological edge and strong female leads, The Stillwater Girls is a compelling, eerie, and ultimately satisfying read. Definitely one of those books that lingers in your mind after the final chapter.
