There are books that move you. And then there are books that shake you, forcing you to stop, breathe, and process the depth of human suffering and the miracle of survival. All the Glimmering Stars is one of those books.

Set against the devastating conflict in Uganda during the 1990s, this true story follows Anthony and Florence, two children kidnapped by the Lord’s Resistance Army and forced into one of the most brutal and inhumane environments imaginable. Led by terrorist Joseph Kony, the LRA was infamous for its abduction of children, indoctrinating them through violence, fear, and forced “marriages.” This book does not shy away from the nightmare. There were moments so horrifying I had to put it down, walk away, and come back when I was emotionally ready. That alone speaks volumes.

But this isn’t just a story of darkness – it’s also a story of light.

Anthony, a resilient survivor, endures soul-crushing loss, believing at one point that his entire family has been killed. His story is one of strength carved through trauma. Florence, intelligent and resourceful, survives through her quick thinking and courage. In a system that was designed to crush hope, the two somehow managed to find it, in God, in their love, and in the dream of a future beyond the LRA.

In many so-called “marriages” within the LRA, the bond ended when the man escaped, running away from his family and starting a whole new life on his own. But Anthony and Florence’s love defied that cruel pattern. Anthony couldn’t abandon her, not after everything they’d endured together. That, more than anything, is what lingered with me: the strength of a love forged in fire.

Mark Sullivan’s writing is poetic and immersive, with many beautifully quotable lines that linger like prayers. His style makes the story deeply human, grounding it in the raw emotions of fear, faith, and the longing for freedom. The pacing is straightforward and accessible, but the emotional weight runs deep. This is a book that leaves scars, in a good way.

Though I had some awareness of the LRA from the viral KONY 2012 campaign in my teen years, I had no real grasp of the full scope of the horror. All the Glimmering Stars opened my eyes. It is shocking to realize this happened not in some ancient time, but in the modern era, while many of us were comfortably going about our daily lives. It’s a humbling, gut-wrenching reminder of the evils we cannot afford to look away from.

As a Catholic, I was especially struck by how much faith and prayer must have been required to survive what Anthony and Florence endured. Their story is steeped in redemptive suffering, and the grace of their final reunion – and eventual, true wedding – is nothing short of miraculous. One of the most emotional moments comes when a long-lost friend, also recently escaped, surprises them at the end of their wedding. That scene was beautiful and reminded me that God is good.

This book reinforced my belief that faith, love, and the will to survive are among the most powerful forces on Earth. It reminded me that God was with them in the darkness. That even in the worst moments of despair, He never left.

All the Glimmering Stars is not just a story. It’s a testimony. It’s a warning. It’s a miracle.

I’ll never forget Anthony and Florence, and I don’t think anyone who reads this book will either.
