It took me a hot minute to realize this was basically a grown-up retelling of Beauty and the Beast, but once I did, I loved how brilliantly put together it was. Maas takes something familiar and reshapes it into a story that feels completely her own – gritty, imaginative, and full of depth.

One of my favorite things about this book is Feyre herself. She isn’t a princess waiting to be rescued – she’s tough, independent, and full of grit. She’s flawed in ways that make her feel real, and that strength is what carries the story. Tamlin is a perfect rehash of the beast, and yet he’s such an original character at the same time. The idea of “familiar vs. fresh” is such a fun way to look at a classic fairy tale, and Maas nails the balance between recognizable roots and bold new storytelling.

What completely threw me was the big reveal about the curse (I won’t spoil it, I swear). I wasn’t expecting it to be hidden by characters I thought I could trust, and that sense of betrayal really raised the stakes for me. It’s one of those moments that reminds you that in this world, nothing is simple and you really can’t trust anyone.

The world itself is stunning. Maas’ writing is poetic and vivid, with so much sensory detail that Prythian feels ethereal and alive. It’s the kind of fantasy world I would love to be immersed in: beautiful, dangerous, and unlike anything else I’ve read.

Character-wise, Lucien is easily my favorite. I love a witty secondary character who’s central to the plot, and he brought so much spark to the story. As for Rhys, I still don’t know how to feel about him yet, but I know I’ll be seeing more of him later in the series, which makes me excited to keep going.

What impressed me most was the balance of dark fantasy and romance. This story definitely has that “dark vs. light” feel, but the romance never overshadowed the danger or the grit. Maas struck the perfect balance, creating something both haunting and beautiful.

I honestly have no idea where the rest of the series is headed, but that makes me all the more excited to continue. If A Court of Thorns and Roses is just the beginning, I can’t wait to see what’s waiting in Prythian next.
