Today I’m revisiting an old favorite of mine: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. A story of coming-of-age and discovering one’s personal journey, I first read this book at twenty-two (right before moving out of my parents’ house) so it carries a special sense of nostalgia for me. I still remember that time in my life, standing on the edge of independence, finally ripping into adulthood, and how this book helped guide me along the way.

The story follows a shepherd boy named Santiago from the Andalusian region. He meets a mysterious man named Melchizedek, who identifies himself as the King of Salem and encourages Santiago to set off on a journey to the Egyptian pyramids, where a treasure supposedly awaits him. Along the way, Santiago learns deep lessons about following one’s dreams – what Coelho calls a person’s “Personal Legend.”

Santiago faces many obstacles throughout his travels, meeting an unforgettable cast of characters who each shape his understanding of faith and purpose. Though his journey takes far longer than expected, he remains steadfast, never giving up on his quest for the treasure.

At its heart, The Alchemist explores faith, destiny, and divine providence, reminding us that everything happens for a reason. We each have our own Personal Legend, our God-given purpose, and this book beautifully illustrates how following God’s will leads us to it.

Full of mysticism and adventure, this timeless story is one you don’t want to miss. It’s easily a must-read for every college student and dreamer. With its lyrical prose, memorable characters, and (spoiler alert) wonderfully twisty ending, there’s something here for everyone to enjoy.
