I got a copy of Shari Lapena’s The Couple Next Door in one of those mystery-thriller blind-date-with-a-book boxes from TikTok, and this was the perfect pick for that format. I hadn’t heard of Lapena before – let alone this book – but it turned out to be exactly the kind of mystery I love, where the twists keep coming the deeper you get into the story.

Anne and Marco Conti are attending a dinner party at their neighbor’s house when their entire world is turned upside down. Their baby daughter, Cora – whom they’ve stupidly left home alone after their babysitter cancels at the last minute – is taken from her crib in the middle of the night. Almost immediately, suspicion begins to spread. Their neighbor Cynthia has been openly flirting with Marco, and Anne starts to believe there may be something more going on between them. The detective on the case is convinced Marco is involved, yet the only solid piece of evidence is a set of tire marks from a car that doesn’t belong to the Conti’s and hasn’t been identified.

Without giving too much away, this story is layered, messy, and full of morally complicated characters. It’s the kind of book that makes you constantly reassess what you think you know, and it’s genuinely hard to put down once it gets going.

That said, a word of caution: this book needs a content warning list longer than a Cheesecake Factory menu. From postpartum depression and mental illness to child abuse and violence, it doesn’t shy away from heavy, unsettling subject matter. If you enjoy thrillers that are dark, twisted, and keep you awake at night wondering what really happened to Baby Cora, this one will absolutely deliver. It also gives strong Lindbergh baby vibes, especially with the wealthy family, public scrutiny, and the lingering question of whether the crime was an inside job.

I went into this book completely blind, with no idea what to expect, and that made the experience even more intense. The story launches straight into the action and never really lets up. Nothing settles until the very last page (and even then, “settles” might be the wrong word, since it ends on another drastically unsettling note).

This is also a great pick if you love to hate characters. There’s so much deception and questionable behavior that trusting anyone feels like a mistake. I’d highly recommend The Couple Next Door to fans of domestic thrillers because it’s fast-paced, uncomfortable, and wildly addictive. I’ll definitely be checking out more of Shari Lapena’s work in the future.
