It’s been another symptom-heavy week for me, and when I’m stuck at home feeling rough, there’s nothing better than curling up in bed with a good mystery. This week’s pick was Maryellen Winkler’s The Disappearance of Darcie Malone, the first installment in her Emily Menotti series. The books don’t necessarily have to be read in order, and I’ve covered a few other favorites from the series before: you can check out my reviews of Murder on the Brandywine, A Killing in Kennett Square, and Death in Rehoboth Beach for more East Coast intrigue.

Winkler’s books strike that perfect balance: short enough to finish in a day or two, but never rushed. They’re ideal for a sick day, a cozy weekend in, or a fall getaway. Each story features multiple suspects and distinctive personalities that keep Emily (and the reader) always guessing. What I especially love is how Winkler sets her mysteries in recognizable East Coast towns; as a Maryland native, I always get a thrill when I realize I’ve driven past the very kind of places she’s describing.

One of Winkler’s signature touches is weaving the paranormal into her mysteries – ghosts, omens, and lingering presences that never overshadow the whodunit plot but add a spooky edge. The Disappearance of Darcie Malone introduces that balance perfectly, establishing Emily’s casual brushes with the supernatural without losing the “Nancy Drew with a grown-up twist” energy that defines the series.

In this story, Darcie vanishes during a late-night séance with her boyfriend, Walter, inside a local haunted house. When Walter is discovered alone – his mind shattered – no trace of Darcie can be found. Did he harm her? Was it the work of a vengeful spirit? Or perhaps one of the other suspicious locals, from Darcie’s overprotective brother to her classmates who had been partying nearby, knows more than they’re saying. As Emily digs deeper, she quickly learns that trust is a dangerous game in this small town.

While this debut entry feels slightly different from later installments, it’s fascinating to see how much Winkler’s craft evolves across the series. Even here, you can sense how deeply personal writing is for her – not just a profession, but a passion project filled with creativity and care.

If you’re looking for a quick, atmospheric read that blends classic murder mystery energy with light supernatural flair, the Emily Menotti series is the perfect choice. The Disappearance of Darcie Malone is especially great for spooky season or anyone who loves small-town mysteries with a touch of the otherworldly.
