Best-selling author Gillian McAllister’s latest novel, Famous Last Words, is a crime thriller that demands your full attention from start to finish. Set in London, the book follows Camilla Deschamps, a new mother returning to work as a book publisher after nine months of maternity leave. But her first day back takes a nightmarish turn—her husband, Luke Deschamps, is at the center of a hostage situation. And he’s not just involved. He’s the gunman.

The story also introduces Niall Thompson, a hostage negotiator from Northern Ireland who rarely sees real action in his job. When he makes a split-second decision that leads to the deaths of two hostages, it follows him for the rest of his career. Both Camilla and Niall sense something isn’t right. Despite all the evidence against Luke, the pieces don’t quite fit. Could he really be guilty?

Camilla is one of the most relatable protagonists I’ve read in a long time. Her love for books, her deep devotion to her husband and child (despite the unthinkable circumstances), and even her appreciation for language make her feel authentic. True to her profession, she has a habit of using beautifully uncommon words, including a few borrowed from other languages, which adds depth to her character.

This novel is a masterclass in suspense. Every chapter peels back a new layer, making you second-guess everything you thought you knew. McAllister skillfully ties every loose end together, crafting a story that is as emotionally charged as it is unpredictable. The twists are relentless, the tension is palpable, and the ending is completely unexpected.Famous Last Words is currently available for preorder and will be released on February 25, 2025. If you love crime thrillers that make your heart pound and your mind race, this is one you won’t want to miss!
