Since one of my main genres is psychological thrillers, it’s about time I recommend a Freida McFadden book. If you haven’t heard of Freida McFadden yet, you’re truly missing out—she’s currently one of the biggest names in thrillers, with many hits like The Teacher and The Housemaid series. Known for her masterful twists and fast-paced storytelling, McFadden has a talent for keeping readers up late into the night, flipping pages frantically to uncover the next shocking revelation. Today, I’ll be talking about her book Want to Know a Secret?—a domestic thriller that starts with a seemingly perfect life and slowly unravels into chaos.

The main character, April, is a stay-at-home mom living in an upper-class neighborhood with her husband and son. To the outside world, she appears to have it all: a beautiful home, a happy family, and a successful YouTube baking channel called April’s Sweet Secrets. But, as the title suggests, April is hiding some serious secrets—ones that could destroy her carefully curated life if exposed.

April is also an unreliable narrator, a classic Freida McFadden staple. From the very beginning, we get hints that she may not be telling the whole truth. The question is: how much of what she says can we trust?

One thing I always appreciate in McFadden’s writing is her attention to theme, and in this book, she cleverly weaves baking throughout the story. Not only does April share baking hacks as part of her channel, but these little tricks also serve as a metaphor—reminding us that sometimes, the perfect-looking cake can have something rotten lurking beneath the surface. I might even have to try some of these hacks at some point and do a post about which ones actually work!

April’s world starts to unravel when she begins receiving anonymous text messages from someone who knows her biggest secret (which I won’t spoil here!). These messages aren’t just vague threats—they come with photographic evidence, proving that the sender has been watching her closely.

As April scrambles to figure out who is behind these texts, her paranoia starts to spiral out of control. Could it be one of her neighbors? A friend? And what will happen if this secret gets out? Her marriage is already on shaky ground, especially with her husband’s young and suspiciously attentive secretary, who seems to have an uncanny ability to control his availability during work hours.

As with any Freida McFadden novel, you can count on a huge twist—and this one I did not see coming! What starts as a suspenseful domestic drama soon escalates into a compelling murder mystery, leaving the reader questioning everything they thought they knew.

McFadden’s signature fast-paced, short-chapter style makes this book almost impossible to put down. Every time I told myself I’d stop at the next chapter, I found myself saying, “Just one more.” Before I knew it, I had torn through the entire book.

If you love psychological thrillers with shocking twists, unreliable narrators, and unrelenting suspense, this book is a must-read. Want to Know a Secret? delivers all the juicy drama, paranoia, and nail-biting tension that Freida McFadden is known for. And if you’re new to her books, this one is a great place to start! This book, along with many of McFadden’s other works, is available on Kindle Unlimited, making it easy to dive in without breaking the bank.Have you read Want to Know a Secret? If so, did you guess the twist at the end? Let me know in the comments—but no spoilers! 😉
