Her husband, Jack Whitfield III, is a wealthy older man who she believes has emotionally checked out of their relationship – though her friend Laine, ever the wise and grounded one, isn’t so sure. Ella Rae, the spitfire of the group, is Carrigan’s fiercest defender and comic relief rolled into one. But when one of the trio receives a devastating diagnosis, the tone shifts, and the friends are forced to reckon with what truly matters.

This novel is a bittersweet ride; a blend of grief, humor, and grace. Carrigan’s inner voice is sharp and relatable, making even her most flawed decisions feel human. McHale handles the emotional heaviness of illness and loss with honesty and tenderness, without straying into melodrama. If you’ve ever lost someone too soon, this one will hit hard.

That said, I do want to flag one element that didn’t sit quite right with me. Jack and Carrigan’s relationship has a significant age gap – when they married, he was about 26 and she was just 17. While the novel doesn’t dwell on this timeline too heavily, I personally find it hard to read relationships like this portrayed as unproblematic. If you’re sensitive to age gaps or relationship power dynamics, that may be something to keep in mind.

There are other sensitive topics touched on in the story as well: cancer, substance abuse, and even discussions of abuse in past relationships – some from male characters sharing their own experiences, which I found to be a unique and humanizing perspective. If you’re someone who prefers to know content warnings ahead of time, I’d recommend looking into those before reading. Ultimately, The Secret to Hummingbird Cake is a beautiful, emotionally grounded novel about forgiveness, resilience, and the kind of friendships that never fade. It’s a great choice if you enjoy stories about rediscovering love, second chances, and holding on tight to the people who matter most.
